Flat face seal is a kind of anti-fungus seal used in water pipes that are installed either inside or outside the house. It is usually made of plastic, or sometimes stainless steel, and it is designed to resist oil, grease, and other kinds of contaminants. The plastic or steel are cut into flat strips that become part of the water pipe or the line. It is then fastened with fittings called hydraulic standard fittings.

Hydraulic standard fittings are often referred to as flexible flange seals. They work by preventing the gas or liquid that passes through them from expanding to a larger diameter than the one that was in use. There are two kinds of flat face seals available, which have different sizes. One is a rigid version that has a threading that is notched at one end, while the other has a nonthreaded flange. Rigid types prevent the gas from expanding too much, while non-threaded types prevent the liquid from flowing in the manner it did prior to installation.

Flange seals must be installed by certified installers, and only a few industries are qualified to do so. These include pipeline companies, which must have a permit from the state to do so; power plants, which need approval from the US Department of Transportation; and municipal water treatment plants, which are regulated by the cities that supply them with treated water. Before a fitting can be placed on an existing pipeline, it must first undergo inspection to determine its suitability for sealing and preventing leaks.

Flat metal seals are often used in places where it is necessary to prevent the passage of vapors, such as refrigerators, where condensation can form a barrier between the interior of the refrigerator and the exterior. These kinds of fittings are usually incorporated within the metallic surfaces that surround the appliance, such as around thermostat mechanism, valve trim, and wiring. The metal seals are often designed to match or complement the aesthetic of the appliance. For example, ice-makers are often designed with flat metal seals to match or blend in with the aesthetic of the refrigerator or ice maker.

A flat face seal body provides two main benefits. First, the flat body provides protection from external pressures. This is especially important in automobiles, where an automobile's hood, windshield, or other exposed parts may come in contact with chemicals or vapor. Second, the design prevents the flow of a product that could expand beyond the container, thus protecting the product from damaging its internal parts, particularly the sealing ring.

One application in which this kind of flat metal seal body is most useful is in preventing the passage of hot liquids. This is most apparent in the presence of a gas or vapor in a high pressure area. In these cases, the sealing ring is able to cover the opening, preventing the vapor from expanding into a dangerous vapor cloud. Another application in which the flat body is most helpful is in the area of cross sectional view applications.
