The hydraulic system uses countless different types of accessories and adapters, which have different sealing methods and thread forms. Although the sealing method can usually be distinguished by appearance, the thread form looks the same, so it is difficult to identify them when the equipment needs to be modified or repaired. However, the accessory can be easily identified through the process of elimination after uninstalling the accessory.

First, determine whether the accessory is permanent or reusable?

Because reusable or field-connectable hydraulic hose couplings are considered "old technology", they are not commonly used today. Reusable connectors are easy to identify because they can be properly installed on the hose using only wrenches and vices. Reusable accessories are usually more expensive than crimped accessories and are more time-consuming during assembly.

Hydraulic hose couplings can be permanent or reusable. Permanent or crimped hydraulic accessories are widely used in the fluid power industry because they are easier and faster to install than reusable accessories. Crimp joints are also more reliable.

Identify connectors and port connections
Before properly assembling or installing the correct hose or tube assembly, the ports and connectors in the hydraulic system must be accurately identified.

Next, determine the sealing method
The type of hydraulic joint depends on its size, configuration and thread type. The three most common types of hose connectors are O-rings, butt angles and threads. However, there are several other types of hydraulic hose connectors available.

Identify hydraulic hose fittings-matching angle seal mating angle: An example of a mating angle is SAE 45 ° or JIC 37 °, but there are other angles. Fittings with corner seats have straight or parallel threads for sealing. When connecting male to female threads together, the threads themselves do not actually form a seal. Instead, they function mechanically to put the two mating corner seats together, eventually forming a seal. After confirming the sealing method, check the O-ring, nose seat, seat angle and joint termination position. You can visually see the position of the O-ring and the type of nose pads. However, you will need to use the seat gauge to determine the seat angle. Use the caliper to measure the thread diameter at the maximum point (outer diameter of outer thread (OD); inner diameter of inner thread (ID)). Use a wire gauge to determine the number of wires per inch. Comparing specifications and connecting threads on a light background can ensure accurate readings.

Identify hydraulic hose joints-O-ring seals: Three O-ring seal designs are O-ring bosses, flat O-ring seals and O-ring flanges. For these types of couplings, an O-ring seal is the main component that creates the seal.
